On April 20 2016, meat company Vanlommel from Olen received a visit from the Agriculture Minister Willy Borsus. During this event the Belgian veal specialist presented an investment programme to the value of EUR 10 million. This consists of an expansion of 4000 square meters on the plant in Olen.

“We build extra production space and cooling capacity in 3 phases”, says commercial manager Johan Heylen. The 1st phase is almost completed. The entire expansion has to be done by the end of this year. This is an important investment for the Vanlommel Group. It has to enable the company even more to meet the challenges of the future.

Importance for the Campine Region

Vanlommel took the opportunity to inform the minister about the importance of the veal industry for the Campine Region. Almost three-fourths of the calf rearing companies are located in the province of Antwerp and offer directly and indirectly over 1000 jobs.

Today, the veal specialist from Olen exports 65 % of the production, mainly within Europe. During the conversation with the minister special attention was paid to the importance of the government support in the sector in order to eliminate the still existing trade restrictions in certain countries outside of Europe. This not to inhibit the growth trajectory of the industry.

Vanlommel Group presents approximately 40 % of the total veal production in Belgium, which results in market leadership. When veal and beef are summed up, Vanlommel widely presents 15 % of the Belgian production.
